Death of a Foster Son

Death of a Foster Son considers the fluid boundaries between human and more-than-human in the Arctic. The text, part autobiographical and part legend, explores the uncanny point at which the lives of polar bears and humans meet. My own contemporary encounter with a polar bear in north-west Greenland is woven together with an Inuit folk tale transcribed by Knud Rasmussen in the early twentieth century. The book is illustrated with cyanotype collages inspired by traditional catch-share diagrams used by hunters to distribute meat fairly among the commons. The project was composed during a residency at Ilulissat Museum, Greenland.
