Death of a Foster Son

Death of a Foster Son considers the fluid boundaries between human and more-than-human in the Arctic. The text, part autobiographical and part legend, explores the uncanny point at which the lives of polar bears and humans meet. My own contemporary encounter with a polar bear in north-west Greenland is woven together with an Inuit folk tale transcribed by Knud Rasmussen in the early twentieth century. The book is illustrated with cyanotype collages inspired by traditional catch-share diagrams used by hunters to distribute meat fairly among the commons. The project was created while Artist in Residence at Ilulissat Museum, Greenland in 2017.

This book is held in the special collections of Jan Michalski Fondation, Switzerland; Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich; Cardiff Metropolitan University; the Bodleian Library, Oxford; and National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh.
